I was fortunate to have the money to purchase one of these bad boys and I am not disappointed with the results I am achieving. Yes, it was a little expensive, but as they say….you get what you pay for.

When I first took up photography I tried to do everything on the cheap. I always liked a bargain and still do for that matter!!! After several years of taking pictures with my trusty Pentax and great advice from a good friend I starting shooting with good expensive glass. I can safely say I don’t regret spending my hard-earned cash on quality.

So less waffle and more about this monster of a lens! Yes, it is BIG and HEAVY and looks a tad funny on my little Sony A7R2. However, I love it to bits. Well……more of…..like it a lot.

I have only used it about 3 times to date. Once to shot the moon and boy oh boy was I impressed. It was pretty sharp at 600mm. I could see the American flag on the moon. Nah….I am just kidding. I could see those craters though.

I also tried to shoot some birds during a dull day and again was well pleased with the results. The sharpness in and around the sweet spot is incredible for a zoom lens.

I have yet to photograph any planes, but I will hopefully add to the sample images linked below when I can.

Next on the purchase list will be the 1.4 teleconverter. That should allow me to achieve about 840mm. Why not the 2X I hear you say? Well, other than photographing the moon I am not sure I would make good use of it. Remember you lose 1 stop of light when you add a 1.4 teleconverter and 2 stops with a 2X teleconverter. Losing 2 stops on this lens might just be a step too far for the likes of wildlife and planes.

Overall this lens is a beauty for the price you pay. I am pretty sure it stands up well against the more expensive lens. You know the ones I mean. Yes, they cost the price of a new car! So if you own a mirrorless full-frame Sony camera I would recommend you buy this. You certainly won’t be disappointed, for I’m not.
